Looking at Initial Costs

All estimates from home improvement experts and financial gurus suggest you could spend as much as $5,000 in the first year of having a lawn, including all the necessary products and purchasing lawn equipment. The second year will only be slightly lower because you still have to use a lot of products and will have to pay for lawn equipment maintenance.

Many homeowners experience a bad seeding the first year due to drought or heavy rains, so they have to reseed for up to three years for grass to grow and cover the yard. That is an additional expense.

If you go strictly by the numbers, your lawn can cost you up to $8,000 in the first three years.

Hidden Costs

There are other hidden long-term costs to having a natural grass yard including:
· Insect repellent
· Flea and tick medication
· Allergy medication
· Cleaning products for the home and laundry

You don’t think about these things because you are used to buying them. However, they can be costly with an estimated cost of up to $300 a month.

Comparing the Costs

Artificial grass can be expensive to install, but would save over the course of 10 years. You wouldn’t need any lawn equipment, fertilizers or other lawn products. You also wouldn’t need all the insecticides, flea and tick medications, or the amount of allergy medicine you currently buy.

Saving is substantial on cleaning products also because your kids and dogs will not be tracking mud and dirt into the home. Laundry no longer includes clothes with grass and dirt stains, so you aren’t buying all those stain removal products currently in your laundry room. Over the period of 10 years, you could save thousands of dollars.

Specifically, using the current figures, natural grass could cost more than $20,000 over a decade if you include all these hidden costs. Artificial grass has a one-time installation fee, but virtually no cost over the rest of the decade.

Time Savings

Artificial grass will also save you aggravation because you will not need to spend hours in the yard trying to keep your grass beautiful. You can spend that extra time putting in a few more calls at work and, perhaps, generating more money. So, it is possibly you will end up with more overall income from installing artificial grass.

However, most people see the extra time as adding to their quality of life because that is more time you can spend with your family. With a low-maintenance yard, you and your family will enjoy spending time outside more. That could be where the real savings lie.
