Dirt: Artificial grass should not be installed directly on dirt. Dirt turns to mud when it rains and allows water to pool on the surface. It also isn’t solid enough to keep the turf in place and would develop lumps, divots, wrinkles, and more. An artificial grass installation is a delicate process that requires a few specific steps in order to be done correctly. 

The first thing that needs to be done is to create a base layer out of Class II road base and crushed limestone. This base needs to be level and compacted in order to provide a solid foundation and to help facilitate drainage before the artificial grass is installed on top of it. 

Once the base is prepared, the artificial grass can then be laid down, trimmed, and secured into place. The final step is to infill the artificial grass with silica sand infill or another infill material.
